Constant acceleration ⇒ v–t graph is a straight (sloped) line; x–t graph is a parabola, since displacement grows with t².

For an object moving with constant acceleration a, starting with initial velocity u at t = 0:

Velocity–time graph:

v=u+atv = u + at

This is a linear equation in t (of the form y = mx + c), so plotting v against t gives a straight line with:

  • y-intercept = u (velocity at t = 0)
  • slope = a (the constant acceleration)

If a > 0, the line slopes upward; if a < 0 (deceleration), it slopes downward. (The area under this line, from 0 to t, equals the displacement — a useful cross-check.)

Displacement–time graph:

x=ut+12at2x = ut + \frac{1}{2}at^2

This is quadratic in t, so plotting x against t gives a parabola:

  • It starts at x = 0 (assuming the object starts at the origin) with initial slope u (the tangent's slope at t=0 equals the initial velocity) …
