Acceleration is defined as the rate at which velocity changes with time, a = dv/dt, and is a vector quantity measured in m/s^2.

When the velocity of a body changes with time — either in magnitude (speeding up or slowing down) or in direction (changing course), or both — the body is said to be accelerating.

Average acceleration over a time interval deltat, during which the velocity changes by deltav = v2 - v1, is defined as

a_avg = deltav/deltat = (v2-v1)/(t2-t1)

Instantaneous acceleration, the acceleration at a particular instant, is obtained by taking the limit as deltat approaches zero:

a = dv/dt
