Question of 51

Q.Define uniformly accelerated motion. A particle is moving with uniform acceleration a in a straight path. Its initial velocity is u, displacement S and final velocity v. Using calculus method show that: v² = u² + 2aS OR A projectile is thrown at an angle θ from the horizontal with velocity u under the gravitational field of Earth. Uniformly accelerated motion = constant acceleration; writing a=v dv/dxa = v\,dv/dx and integrating over the displacement gives v2=u2+2aSv^2 = u^2+2aS.

Definition: Uniformly accelerated motion is motion in which the velocity of a particle changes by equal amounts in equal intervals of time — i.e., the acceleration aa (both magnitude and direction, for straight-line motion just magnitude) remains constant throughout the motion.

Derivation using calculus: Let a particle move in a straight line with constant acceleration aa, initial velocity uu, and let its velocity be vv and displacement SS after some time.

Acceleration is defined as a=dvdta = \dfrac{dv}{dt}. Using the chain rule:

a=dvdt=dvdx⋅dxdt=vdvdxa = \frac{dv}{dt} = \frac{dv}{dx}\cdot\frac{dx}{dt} = v\frac{dv}{dx}

So:

a dx=v dva\,dx = v\,dv
