Displacement is the area under a velocity-time graph. Splitting that trapezoidal area into a rectangle plus a triangle, and using v=u+atv = u+at to express the triangle's height, gives the second equation of motion directly.

Consider a body moving with initial velocity uu and uniform acceleration aa. Plot velocity vv on the y-axis against time tt on the x-axis. Since acceleration is uniform, the graph is a straight line starting at uu (when t=0t=0) and rising to vv (at time tt), where v=u+atv = u + at.

Area under the graph = displacement (since v=ds/dtv = ds/dt, the area under a v-t graph always gives displacement).

The region under this straight line, from t=0t=0 to tt, is a trapezium. Split it into:

  • A rectangle of height uu and width tt: area =ut= ut …
