Product method: sum the value added by all producing units, then adjust for depreciation, net indirect taxes and NFIA.

The product method (value-added or output method) measures national income as the sum of the net value added by all enterprises in the economy during a year, so that only the value of final goods is counted (no double counting).

Steps:

  1. Identify and classify all producing units into sectors (primary, secondary, tertiary).
  2. Estimate the Gross Value of Output of each unit (quantity x price, plus change in stock).
  3. Deduct Intermediate Consumption to get Gross Value Added at Market Price (GVA_MP) for each unit.
  4. Sum the GVA_MP of all units to get GDP at MP.
  5. Deduct depreciation (consumption of fixed capital) to get NDP at MP.
  6. Deduct Net Indirect Taxes (indirect taxes − subsidies) to get NDP at Factor Cost (domestic income).
