The biolistic/gene gun is a method of direct gene transfer that bombards cells with high-velocity micro-particles coated with DNA — mainly used for plant transformation where the rigid cell wall makes other delivery methods difficult.

In the biolistic (biological + ballistic) method, DNA of interest is coated onto minute metal particles, which are then physically accelerated at very high velocity (using a particle gun/gene gun) to bombard target plant cells or tissues. The particles penetrate the cell wall and membrane, carrying the DNA into the cell, where it can integrate into the host genome. This method is especially valuable for transforming plant cells because their rigid cellulose cell wall is otherwise a major barrier to gene delivery (e.g. via Agrobacterium in cereals). The …
