Many plant cells resist infection by Agrobacterium (the natural gene-transfer vector), so an alternative, direct DNA-delivery method is used for such plants: the biolistic method, or 'gene gun'. In this technique, the desired DNA (gene of interest) is coated onto the surface of tiny particles of gold or tungsten (about 1-3 micrometres), which are then accelerated to high velocity (using a gun-like device, often propelled by high-pressure helium gas) and physically shot into the target plant cells or tissue.
