The gene gun (also known as the biolistic or particle bombardment) method is a physical method used in plant genetic engineering to deliver foreign DNA into plant cells, particularly useful because many plant cells (with their tough cell walls) are difficult to transform using biological vectors such as Agrobacterium. In this method, microscopic particles of an inert heavy metal (commonly gold or tungsten) are coated with the DNA to be introduced, and these DNA-coated particles are then accelerated to very high velocity (using a gas-pressure-driven device) and literally shot into plant cells or tissue.
