DDT is a non-biodegradable, fat-soluble pesticide. When sprayed on crops to control insect pests, it enters the food chain — for instance, insects/fish absorb small amounts of DDT from contaminated crops/water, and this DDT is not excreted but stored in fatty tissue. As it passes from one trophic level to the next (insects → small fish/insectivorous birds → larger birds of prey), the concentration of DDT increases at each successive trophic level — a phenomenon called biological magnification, since organisms higher up the chain consume many contaminated prey and cannot break down or excrete the DDT.
