Stanley Miller (with Harold Urey), created an experimental apparatus that circulated a mixture of gases believed to represent the primitive earth's reducing atmosphere (CH4, NH3, H2 and water vapour) in a closed loop, subjected to a continuous electric spark discharge (simulating lightning) at 800°C, with the condensed products collected via a condenser and trap. Through this, Miller tried to prove the hypothesis (based on Oparin and Haldane's theory of chemical evolution/origin of life) that under the reducing, oxygen-free conditions believed to prevail on early earth, simple inorganic gases could spontaneously combine, driven by an energy source like electric discharge, to form simple organic compounds, including amino acids — the basic building blocks of life — thereby supporting …
