In auto-immunity, the immune system loses the ability to tell self from non-self and destroys the body's own tissue.

Normally, the immune system is able to distinguish the body's own (self) cells and molecules from foreign (non-self) invaders, and mounts an immune response only against the latter. In an auto-immune disease, this self-tolerance breaks down: the immune system mistakenly recognises the body's own healthy cells/tissues as foreign and mounts an immune attack (via antibodies and/or immune cells) against them, causing tissue damage and disease.
