Autoimmune disease is a breakdown of self/non-self discrimination by the immune system, causing it to attack the body's own tissues.

The immune system is normally able to distinguish the body's own ("self") molecules and cells from foreign ("non-self") invaders, and mounts an attack only against the latter. In autoimmune diseases, this self-tolerance breaks down: the immune system mistakenly recognises certain self-antigens as foreign and produces antibodies (autoantibodies) or activates immune cells against the body's own tissues, causing progressive damage to the affected organ(s) or system.
