The metre bridge is a Wheatstone-bridge-based instrument that finds an unknown resistance by locating the null (balance) point on a 1 m wire.

Construction: A metre bridge consists of a uniform 1-metre resistance wire AC stretched over a metre scale, fixed between two thick copper strips forming three gaps. The unknown resistance XX is connected in one outer gap, a known resistance box RR in the other outer gap, and a galvanometer with a sliding jockey is connected between the middle terminal (B) and a point D on the wire. A battery drives current through the wire via the two end terminals.
