A meter bridge is a practical Wheatstone bridge on a 1-metre wire; at the balance (null) point, the unknown resistance is found from the ratio of the two wire lengths.

Principle: The meter bridge works on the principle of the Wheatstone bridge. In a balanced Wheatstone bridge, no current flows through the galvanometer, and the four resistances satisfy:

P/Q = R/S

In the meter bridge, the resistances P and Q are replaced by the resistances of the two parts of a uniform 1-metre resistance wire (of uniform cross-section) on either side of the sliding jockey contact, so their ratio equals the ratio of their lengths: P/Q = l1/l2. This gives the working relation:

R/S = l1/(100 − l1) = l1/l2

where R is the unknown resistance, S is a known resistance box, l1 is the balancing length from one end to the jockey's null point, and l2 = (100 − l1) is the remaining length.
