A metre bridge is a practical Wheatstone bridge; balancing it gives the unknown resistance as X=R l/(100−l)X = R\,l/(100-l).

Circuit: The metre bridge consists of a 1 metre long uniform resistance wire AC stretched along a metre scale, with a jockey J that can touch any point on the wire. The unknown resistance XX is connected in the left gap and a known standard resistance box RR in the right gap of the bridge, forming a Wheatstone-bridge arrangement together with the two parts of the wire (AJ and JC) as the other two arms. A battery (with a key and rheostat) is connected across A and C, and a galvanometer is connected between the junction of XX and RR, and the jockey J.

The jockey is slid along the wire until the galvanometer shows zero deflection — this is the balance (null) point, at length ll cm from end A.
