Figure — Stem asks to draw the ray diagram of a compound microscope; the catalog figure is precisely the compound-micro

A compound microscope forms a magnified image using an objective and an eyepiece in sequence; the two magnifications multiply.

Construction/ray diagram (described): A compound microscope has two converging (convex) lenses of short focal length: the objective (facing the object, very short focal length fof_o) and the eyepiece (near the eye, focal length fef_e), mounted coaxially at the two ends of a tube, separated by a distance (the tube length).

The object O is placed just beyond the focus of the objective. Rays from O refract through the objective and form a real, inverted, magnified image I1I_1 inside the tube (between the eyepiece and its focus). This intermediate image I1I_1 then acts as the object for the eyepiece, which is positioned so that I1I_1 falls within its focal length; the eyepiece then acts like a simple magnifier, forming a final virtual, magnified, inverted image I2I_2 at (or near) the least distance of distinct vision, viewed by the eye.

(Ray path: rays from O → refracted by objective, converging to real image I1I_1 → these rays diverge from I1I_1 and are refracted by the eyepiece → emerge as a widened beam appearing to come from virtual image I2I_2.)
