Young's modulus, Y = stress/strain = FL/(AΔL), has SI unit the pascal (N/m²).

Definition: Young's modulus of elasticity is defined, within the elastic limit of a material, as the ratio of longitudinal stress to the longitudinal strain produced.

Y=Longitudinal stressLongitudinal strainY = \dfrac{\text{Longitudinal stress}}{\text{Longitudinal strain}}

Expression: Consider a wire of original length L and cross-sectional area A. When a stretching force F is applied along its length, it extends by ΔL\Delta L.

Longitudinal stress = force per unit area = FA\dfrac{F}{A}

Longitudinal strain = fractional change in length = ΔLL\dfrac{\Delta L}{L}

Therefore:

Y=F/AΔL/L=FLA ΔLY = \dfrac{F/A}{\Delta L / L} = \dfrac{FL}{A\,\Delta L}
