(A) The rail gap accommodates thermal expansion in hot weather. (B) Sugar dissolving in tea absorbs heat from the tea (endothermic), cooling it slightly.

(A) Gap between railway rails

Metals expand on heating (linear thermal expansion): ΔL=L α ΔT\Delta L = L\,\alpha\,\Delta T, where α\alpha is the coefficient of linear expansion. Iron rails are exposed to large temperature variations between summer and winter (and even between night and day). If rails were laid end-to-end with no gap at all, on a hot day each rail would try to expand in length but would be constrained by the neighbouring rail — this compressive constraint would cause the rails to bend, buckle, or bow sideways out of the track, which is dangerous for running trains.

A small gap (expansion joint) is therefore deliberately left between consecutive rail sections during laying, so that on a hot day the rails can expand into this gap without being obstructed, keeping the track straight and safe.

(B) Tea cools when sugar is added
