For small temperature changes, area expansion works out to about 2×(linear expansion) and volume expansion to about 3×(linear expansion), giving α = β/2 = γ/3.

Thermal expansion is the phenomenon in which the dimensions (length, area or volume) of a body increase when its temperature is raised.

  • Coefficient of linear expansion: α = ΔL / (L·ΔT)
  • Coefficient of area (superficial) expansion: β = ΔA / (A·ΔT)
  • Coefficient of volume (cubical) expansion: γ = ΔV / (V·ΔT)

Derivation: Consider a cube of side L0 at temperature T. On heating by ΔT, each side becomes:

L = L0 (1 + αΔT)

Area: A = L² = L0² (1 + αΔT)² = L0² (1 + 2αΔT + α²ΔT²)
