The male gametophyte develops from a microspore mother cell through meiosis, mitotic divisions and germination on the stigma to produce two male gametes; MTP is the legally regulated intentional termination of pregnancy.

(a) Development of the male gametophyte in Angiosperms (3 marks):

  1. Inside the microsporangium (pollen sac) of the anther, diploid microspore mother cells (pollen mother cells) undergo meiosis to produce a tetrad of four haploid microspores.
  2. The microspores separate from each other and develop a hard, resistant outer wall (exine, made of sporopollenin) and thin inner wall (intine), becoming mature pollen grains.
  3. Within the pollen grain, the haploid nucleus divides mitotically (mitosis-I) to form two unequal cells: a large vegetative cell and a small generative cell — this 2-celled stage is the pollen grain as it is usually shed from the anther.
  4. In about one-third of angiosperm species, the generative cell further divides mitotically (mitosis-II) — either before the pollen is shed, or later inside the pollen tube after germination on the stigma — to form two male gametes (sperm cells).
  5. Upon landing on a compatible stigma, the pollen grain germinates, and the vegetative cell forms a pollen tube that grows through the style carrying the two male gametes towards the ovule for double fertilisation.

This complete structure — the pollen grain with its vegetative cell and two male gametes — constitutes the mature male gametophyte.
