A mature (7-celled, 8-nucleate) embryo sac has 3 antipodal cells at the chalazal end (A), a central cell with 2 polar nuclei (B, C), and an egg apparatus (egg + 2 synergids) at the micropylar end; the synergids' micropylar tip bears the filiform apparatus, which guides the pollen tube in.

(i) Parts A and C:

  • Part A (the cluster of three cells at the chalazal end, farthest from the micropyle) = Antipodal cells. They are somatic in function (no role in fertilization) and usually degenerate after fertilization.
  • Part C (one of the two adjoining nuclei in the central cell, just below the antipodals) = a Polar nucleus. The central cell contains two polar nuclei (here labelled B and C) which later fuse with a male gamete during triple fusion to form the triploid primary endosperm nucleus. …
