Tollens' reagent is freshly prepared ammoniacal silver nitrate; aldehydes reduce it to metallic silver, depositing a bright silver mirror on the test-tube walls.

Preparation: Silver nitrate solution is treated with a little dilute NaOH to precipitate Ag2O\text{Ag}_2\text{O}, which is then dissolved in ammonium hydroxide (in slight excess) to form the soluble diammine silver(I) complex, [Ag(NH3)2]+OH−[\text{Ag(NH}_3)_2]^+\text{OH}^- — this clear solution is Tollens' reagent.

Use: When warmed gently with an aldehyde, the aldehyde is oxidised to a carboxylate ion while Ag+\text{Ag}^+ is reduced to metallic silver, which deposits as a shiny mirror on the clean glass surface: …
