Rusting adds mass through oxide/hydrate formation; thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics differ in cross-linking behaviour on heating; a zwitter ion is a neutral, internally-charged amino acid form.

  1. Why iron gains weight on rusting Rusting is an electrochemical oxidation process where iron reacts with atmospheric oxygen and moisture to form hydrated iron(III) oxide (rust): 4Fe+3O2+2xH2O→2Fe2O3.xH2O4Fe + 3O_2 + 2xH_2O \rightarrow 2Fe_2O_3.xH_2O Since oxygen atoms and water molecules from the surroundings are chemically incorporated into the solid rust product, the total mass of the solid (iron + rust) increases compared to the starting mass of pure iron — the added mass is exactly the mass of oxygen and water absorbed.
  2. Thermoplastics vs Thermosetting Plastics
  • Thermoplastics: Linear or slightly branched long-chain polymers with relatively weak intermolecular forces between chains. On heating, they soften and can be moulded into a new shape; on cooling they harden again. This softening/hardening cycle can be repeated, so they can be reused/recycled. Examples: polythene, PVC, polystyrene.
  • Thermosetting plastics: On heating/moulding, these undergo extensive cross-linking (permanent covalent bonds forming between chains), converting them into a rigid, infusible 3-D network. Once set, they cannot be softened/remoulded again by heating — attempting to do so simply chars/decomposes them. Examples: bakelite, melamine-formaldehyde resin.
