Corrosion is electrochemical surface degradation of a metal on exposure to the environment; Faraday's first law relates the mass deposited during electrolysis to the charge passed.

Definition of corrosion: Corrosion is a natural electrochemical process in which a metal, on exposure to atmospheric conditions such as moisture, air (O2), and acidic gases/pollutants, is slowly oxidised and converted into an unwanted compound (usually an oxide, sulphide, or carbonate) on its surface, causing it to lose its original strength, shine, and mechanical properties. The most familiar example is the rusting of iron, in which iron reacts with oxygen and moisture to form hydrated iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3·xH2O), rust. Corrosion is essentially an electrochemical cell process, with tiny anodic and cathodic regions forming on the metal surface.
