Rusting is a tiny galvanic cell on the iron surface: Fe is oxidised at the anode, O2 is reduced at the cathode, and Fe2+ finally becomes hydrated Fe2O3 (rust).

On a moist iron surface, water containing dissolved CO2 and O2 acts as the electrolyte and sets up local electrochemical cells.
