Arithmetic mean is simple, rigidly defined, and based on every observation, which makes it the most commonly used average — but it is also distorted by extreme values and cannot represent qualitative data.

Merits of Arithmetic Mean:

  1. Rigidly defined by a precise mathematical formula, so different people calculating it from the same data always get the same answer.
  2. Based on all observations in the series — unlike median or mode, every value contributes to the mean, so no data is left out.
  3. Easy to calculate and understand, even for people without a strong statistical background.
  4. Capable of further algebraic/mathematical treatment — e.g., if the mean and number of items of two groups are known, the combined mean of both groups together can be calculated.
  5. A stable/reliable measure — of all averages, the arithmetic mean is the least affected by sampling fluctuations (i.e., it tends to vary the least from sample to sample).

Demerits of Arithmetic Mean:

  1. Highly affected by extreme values (outliers). A single very large or very small value can pull the mean away from where most of the data actually lies, e.g., the mean of (2, 3, 4, 5, 100) is heavily distorted by the 100.
  2. Cannot be calculated for qualitative data, such as honesty or beauty, since it requires numerical values. …
