The arithmetic mean is the most commonly used average because it is simple and based on all observations, but it has limitations, chiefly its sensitivity to extreme values.

Merits of Arithmetic Mean:

  1. Simple and easy to understand/calculate — requires only basic addition and division.
  2. Rigidly defined — has one and only one value for a given set of data (no ambiguity, unlike mode).
  3. Based on all observations — every value in the data set is used in its computation, so no information is lost.
  4. Capable of further algebraic treatment — e.g., the combined mean of two groups can be found, which is useful for further statistical analysis.
  5. Least affected by sampling fluctuations — among various averages, it tends to be the most stable from sample to sample.

Demerits of Arithmetic Mean:

  1. Affected by extreme values — one very large or very small value can significantly distort the mean, making it unrepresentative.
  2. Cannot be used for qualitative data — attributes like honesty or beauty cannot be averaged arithmetically. …
