Unlike simple tissues (made of only one cell type, e.g. parenchyma), complex tissues are made up of more than one type of cell, all coordinating to perform a common function. Plants have two complex, permanent tissues:
1. Xylem (conducts water and minerals; provides mechanical strength):
- Tracheids: elongated, tapering, dead cells with lignified walls; water moves between them through pits.
- Vessels (tracheae): long tube-like structures made of many cells (vessel elements) joined end to end, with perforated end walls, allowing efficient long-distance water transport.
- Xylem fibres: thick-walled, lignified, dead cells that provide mechanical support.
- Xylem parenchyma: the only living cells in xylem; store food (starch, fat) and help in radial conduction of water.
2. Phloem (conducts food/organic solutes from source to sink):
- Sieve tube elements: living, elongated cells arranged end to end (sieve tubes), with perforated sieve plates at their junctions through which food materials flow; they lack a nucleus at maturity. …
