Whittaker's five kingdom system (Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia) is based on several criteria applied together, not on any one feature alone.

Criteria used for the five Kingdom System of classification:

  1. Cell structure: Whether the cell is prokaryotic (Monera) or eukaryotic (all other kingdoms).

  3. Mode of nutrition: Whether the organism is autotrophic (photosynthetic, as in Plantae) or heterotrophic (absorptive/saprophytic, as in Fungi; or ingestive/holozoic, as in Animalia).
  4. Mode of reproduction: Asexual or sexual means by which the organism reproduces.
