R.H. Whittaker's five-kingdom classification (1969) used five criteria together — cell structure, body organisation, mode of nutrition, reproduction, and phylogenetic relationships — to group all organisms into Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia.

Before Whittaker, the two-kingdom system (Plantae/Animalia) failed to accommodate organisms like bacteria and fungi properly. Whittaker proposed five kingdoms based on the following criteria applied together:

  1. Cell structure: whether the organism is prokaryotic (no true nucleus/membrane-bound organelles, e.g., bacteria) or eukaryotic (true nucleus present).
  2. Body organisation: the level of organisation of the body — unicellular, colonial, or multicellular; and among multicellular forms, whether the organisation is at the tissue level, organ level, or organ-system level.
  3. Mode of nutrition: whether the organism is autotrophic (photosynthetic, as in plants) or heterotrophic (nutrition by absorption, as in fungi, or by ingestion, as in animals).
  4. Mode of reproduction: the reproductive strategies of the organism (asexual/sexual mechanisms).
  5. Phylogenetic relationships: evolutionary relationships between different groups of organisms, used to infer natural, evolutionarily meaningful groupings rather than a superficial resemblance. …
