Cilia and flagella have the same internal 9+2 structure but differ: cilia are short and many (move materials over the surface), flagella are long and few (propel the cell).

Cilia and flagella are hair-like membrane-bound projections of the cell surface. Both arise from a basal body and have the same internal skeleton — an axoneme made of microtubules in the 9 + 2 arrangement (nine peripheral doublets surrounding a central pair).
