The cytoskeleton (microfilaments, intermediate filaments, microtubules) gives the cell shape and enables movement; the centriole is a microtubule-based structure that organises the mitotic spindle and forms the basal body of cilia/flagella.

Cytoskeleton:

The cytoskeleton is a network of protein fibres present throughout the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells, made of three main types of filaments:

  1. Microfilaments (actin filaments) — thin, solid rods involved in cell shape, muscle contraction and cell movement.
  2. Intermediate filaments — rope-like fibres that provide mechanical/tensile strength to the cell.
  3. Microtubules — hollow tubes made of tubulin protein, involved in maintaining cell shape, intracellular transport, and forming structures like the spindle apparatus, cilia and flagella.

Together these filaments form a dynamic internal scaffold that maintains cell shape, anchors organelles in place, and (together with motor proteins) drives movement of organelles, vesicles and chromosomes within the cell, as well as the movement of the whole cell itself.
