Growth in plants proceeds through three phases — meristematic, elongation, and maturation — and this can be demonstrated by marking equally spaced ink dots on a growing seedling root and watching how the spacing changes with time.

Phases of growth:

  1. Meristematic phase: occurs at the root and shoot apices (and other meristems), where cells are in a continuous state of active division. Cells in this phase are rich in protoplasm, have large, prominent nuclei, and thin cellulosic cell walls, with abundant small vacuoles.

  2. Elongation phase: located just proximal to (behind) the meristematic zone. Here, cells stop dividing and instead increase rapidly in size due to enlargement of vacuoles (vacuolation), increase in cell wall material, and water uptake — this phase contributes most to the overall increase in length of the organ.

  3. Phase of maturation: cells here have completed elongation and gradually attain their maximum size in terms of protoplasm and cell wall thickening; they then differentiate to acquire specific, mature structural and functional characteristics (i.e., they mature into the permanent tissues of the plant).

Demonstrating these phases in a seedling: Take a healthy, actively growing seedling (e.g. a germinating gram or bean seedling with a young root). Using Indian ink or a fine marker, mark a series of straight, equally spaced lines/dots (say, 1–2 mm apart) starting from just behind the root tip and continuing toward the base. Note the initial spacing and let the seedling continue growing for a day or two, then examine the marked region again.
