Growth in plants proceeds through three sequential, overlapping phases — cell division, cell elongation, and cell maturation/differentiation.

Growth in a plant, best seen at the root or shoot apex, occurs through three distinct but overlapping phases:

  1. Meristematic phase: Cells of the root and shoot apical meristems are in a continuous state of division. These cells are small, isodiametric, with dense cytoplasm, prominent nuclei and thin primary cell walls, and (being embryonic) lack large vacuoles.
  2. Elongation phase: Cells located just proximal to the meristematic zone enter this phase. They undergo an increase in vacuolation, protoplasmic increase, and new cell wall deposition, causing a rapid increase in cell size mainly along the axis (elongation). …
