Phases of growth:
-
Meristematic phase: Occurs at the root and shoot apices (apical meristems), where cells are continuously dividing (mitosis). Cells in this phase are small, thin-walled, with dense cytoplasm and a large, prominent nucleus.
-
Elongation phase: Cells proximal to (just behind) the meristematic zone undergo a rapid increase in size due to elongation and vacuolation — vacuoles enlarge and take up water, and new cell wall material is deposited, increasing cell volume and length.
-
Maturation phase: Cells attain their maximum size and differentiate to acquire specific structural and functional characteristics, becoming mature, specialised cells (e.g. developing thicker secondary cell walls in tissues like xylem).
