Living organisms are characterised by growth, reproduction, metabolism, consciousness, and a well-defined cellular organisation, and only their combination (not any single feature) reliably distinguishes life from non-life.

Characteristic Features of Living Organisms

  1. Growth: living organisms grow by an increase in cell number (cell division) and/or cell mass (intrinsic, from within); non-living things like crystals can also "grow" but only by accretion of material from outside — this distinction matters for unicellular organisms, where growth and cell division are the same event.
  2. Reproduction: the production of progeny, similar to the parent, either asexually (e.g. budding, binary fission) or sexually. However, reproduction is not universal to all living organisms (e.g. mules, sterile worker bees do not reproduce), so it is not a defining feature by itself.
  3. Metabolism: the sum of all chemical reactions occurring within an organism (anabolic — building up — and catabolic — breaking down) that maintain the organism's structure and function. Metabolism is unique to living organisms — no non-living object shows internal metabolism — and hence is the most defining property of life, along with cellular organisation.
  4. Cellular organisation: every living organism is made of one or more cells, the fundamental structural and functional unit of life. …
