Living organisms are defined by growth, reproduction, metabolism, cellular organisation, and — most distinctively — the ability to sense and respond to their environment (consciousness).

Main characteristic features of living organisms:

  1. Growth: Living organisms grow by an increase in cell number and/or cell mass, from within (intrinsic growth), through cell division. This differs from non-living things (like a growing crystal or mountain), which grow only by external accumulation of material on their surface.
  2. Reproduction: Living organisms produce offspring similar to themselves, either asexually (e.g., budding, fission) or sexually (fusion of gametes), to perpetuate their species. (Note: some individual organisms, like mules or worker bees, do not reproduce, so reproduction alone cannot define all living things.)
  3. Metabolism: All living organisms carry out a vast number of coordinated biochemical reactions inside their cells (anabolic — building up, and catabolic — breaking down) that maintain and sustain life. This can be demonstrated even in a cell-free, in-vitro system.
  4. Cellular organisation: All living things are made up of one or more cells, the basic structural and functional unit of life. …
