Living organisms exhibit several characteristic features that, taken together, distinguish them from non-living things:
-
Growth: living organisms grow by an increase in cell number and/or cell mass, from within (intrinsic growth), unlike non-living things which may only grow by external accretion of material.
-
Reproduction: organisms produce offspring similar to themselves, ensuring continuity of the species — though this is not absolutely universal (e.g., mules, sterile worker bees do not reproduce, yet are alive).
-
Metabolism: this refers to the sum total of all the chemical reactions occurring within an organism's body, including both synthesis (anabolism) and breakdown (catabolism) reactions, which together maintain and sustain life processes.
-
Consciousness/response to stimuli: living organisms can sense their environment (light, heat, sound, chemicals, touch, etc.) and respond to these stimuli — this 'self-consciousness' or ability to sense and respond is considered a defining feature unique to living things.
-
Cellular organisation: all living organisms are made up of one or more cells, the basic structural and functional unit of life.
-
Homeostasis: the ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external changes.
