ICBN (International Code for Botanical Nomenclature) is the standard set of rules followed worldwide for naming plants scientifically, ensuring each species gets exactly one valid name recognised everywhere.

What is ICBN?

The International Code for Botanical Nomenclature is a formal set of rules and guidelines (now updated and known as the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants, ICN) that scientists across the world follow while assigning a scientific (binomial) name to a plant species. It lays down conventions such as: the name must be in Latin form and consist of two words (genus + specific epithet), the genus name begins with a capital letter and the specific epithet with a small letter, the name should be printed in italics (or underlined when handwritten), and the name of the author who first validly described the species may be added in an abbreviated form after the specific epithet.
