Scientific names of plants follow universally accepted rules laid down by the International Code for Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN), ensuring one plant has one correct, unambiguous name recognised the world over.

Any two of the following well-established rules may be given:

  1. Binomial nomenclature: every scientific name consists of two words, the first denoting the genus and the second the specific epithet, e.g. Mangifera indica.
  2. Language and styling: names are always written in Latin (or latinised) and, when printed, are given in italics; when handwritten, the two words are separately underlined to indicate this.
