Scientific naming of organisms follows Carl Linnaeus's binomial system, governed by a few standard rules covering language, structure, capitalisation and formatting.

The universally accepted rules of biological (binomial) nomenclature, as laid down under the International Codes (ICBN for plants, ICZN for animals), include:

  1. Names are usually derived from Latin (or Latinised) and are treated as Latin words regardless of their origin, since Latin was historically the universal language of scholars.

  2. Biological names are typically written in italics (when printed) to distinguish them from ordinary text.

  3. Each name is made up of two parts — this is the binomial system: the first word is the Generic name (Genus), and the second word is the specific epithet (species name). Together they form the full scientific name of the species, e.g. Mangifera indica.

  4. The first word (genus) always begins with a CAPITAL letter, while the second word (species) always begins with a SMALL (lower-case) letter, even if it is derived from a proper noun.
