Reaction rate ∝ product of the molar concentrations of reactants, each raised to its stoichiometric coefficient — this is the Law of Mass Action, and it underlies the equilibrium constant expression.

Proposed by Guldberg and Waage, the law states: at a given temperature, the rate of a chemical reaction is directly proportional to the product of the 'active masses' (i.e. molar concentrations) of the reactants, each concentration term raised to a power equal to its stoichiometric coefficient in the balanced chemical equation.

For a general reaction aA + bB → products,

Rate ∝ [A]^a [B]^b
