Statement: The law of conservation of mass states that matter (mass) can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction, i.e. in any chemical change, the total mass of the reactants is equal to the total mass of the products.
This law was established by the French chemist Antoine Lavoisier through careful, precise experiments in which reactions were carried out in sealed vessels and the total mass before and after the reaction was measured.
