Antoine Lavoisier proposed the Law of Conservation of Mass in 1789 based on careful experiments in which he weighed reactants and products of chemical reactions in sealed vessels. He found that in every chemical reaction, the total mass of the substances involved before the reaction (reactants) is exactly equal to the total mass of the substances formed after the reaction (products), as long as the reaction is carried out in a closed system so no matter escapes or enters.
Mathematically: Total mass of reactants = Total mass of products.
