This fundamental law of chemical combination was established by Antoine Lavoisier through careful, quantitative experiments in which reactions were carried out in sealed vessels and the total mass before and after the reaction was measured.
Statement: In any chemical reaction, matter is neither created nor destroyed; the total mass of all the reactants consumed is exactly equal to the total mass of all the products formed.
Example: When calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is heated, it decomposes into calcium oxide (CaO) and carbon dioxide (CO2):
CaCO3 → CaO + CO2
