First Law of Thermodynamics: energy is conserved; for a closed system, delta-U = q + w.

The First Law of Thermodynamics is essentially the law of conservation of energy applied to thermodynamic processes: the total energy of an isolated system remains constant; energy can be transformed from one form to another (e.g., heat to work) but can never be created or destroyed.

For a closed system undergoing a change of state, this is expressed as:

delta-U = q + w

where delta-U is the change in internal energy of the system, q is the heat absorbed BY the system from the surroundings, and w is the work done ON the system by the surroundings (using the IUPAC sign convention). If the system does work on the surroundings, or releases heat, those terms are taken as negative.
