The first law of thermodynamics is the law of conservation of energy for a system: delta-U = q + w, meaning the change in internal energy equals the heat absorbed plus the work done on the system.

Statement: The first law of thermodynamics states that the total energy of an isolated system remains constant, i.e., energy can be converted from one form to another but can neither be created nor destroyed. Equivalently, the energy of the universe (system + surroundings) is constant.

Derivation of the mathematical relation: Consider a system with initial internal energy U1. Suppose the system absorbs a quantity of heat q from the surroundings, and work w is done ON the system by the surroundings (IUPAC sign convention: both q and w are positive when they add energy to the system). If the system's internal energy changes to U2, then by conservation of energy, the total energy added to the system (q + w) must equal the increase in its internal energy:

U2 - U1 = q + w

i.e. delta-U = q + w
