Capillarity is the rise/fall of liquid in a narrow tube due to surface tension; balancing the surface-tension force with the weight of the risen liquid column gives h = 2T cos(theta) / (rho g r).

Capillarity (or capillary action) is the phenomenon in which a liquid rises or falls in a tube of very small (capillary) bore, when the tube is dipped into the liquid, as a result of the surface tension of the liquid. Liquids that wet the tube (like water in glass) rise; liquids that do not wet the tube (like mercury in glass) are depressed.

Derivation of the height of rise in a capillary tube:

Consider a capillary tube of radius r dipped vertically into a liquid of density rho and surface tension T, with angle of contact theta. The liquid rises to a height h inside the tube.

At the liquid surface inside the tube, surface tension acts along the circumference of the liquid meniscus, tangential to the liquid surface, making an angle theta with the vertical wall of the tube. The upward vertical component of this surface tension force, acting all around the circumference (length = 2pir), supports the weight of the raised liquid column.

Upward force due to surface tension = T cos(theta) x (2pir)
