Restoring force always acts to push a displaced oscillating body back toward equilibrium; the force constant k measures how strongly this force grows with displacement, via F = -kx.

Restoring force: When a body performing oscillatory motion (such as a mass on a spring, or a simple pendulum) is displaced from its equilibrium (mean) position, a force comes into play that acts in the direction opposite to the displacement, tending to restore the body to its equilibrium position. This is called the restoring force. It is this restoring force that is responsible for the oscillatory (back-and-forth) motion.

For simple harmonic motion (SHM), the restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement x from the mean position, and always directed toward the mean position:

F = -k x

The negative sign shows that the force is opposite in direction to the displacement.
