A rigid body is an idealised body that does not deform under applied forces; torque is the rotational analogue of force, the turning effect produced by a force about an axis.

  1. Rigid body. A rigid body is defined as a body in which the distance between any two particles (any two points within the body) remains constant at all times, regardless of the magnitude of the external forces applied to it. In other words, a rigid body does not deform, bend, stretch, or compress under the action of forces - it is an idealisation, since every real body deforms to some (usually very small) extent under sufficiently large forces. Rigid body mechanics considers only the translational and rotational motion of the body as a whole, ignoring any internal deformation.
  2. Torque. Torque (also called the moment of force) is the measure of the turning or rotational effect produced by a force about a given axis or point. If a force F is applied at a point whose position vector relative to the axis (or a chosen origin) is r, the torque is defined as the vector (cross) product: tau = r x F …
